"It's important that everyone remains ready for when they have to play,'' Mazzari added.

Intermilan 1-0 Lazio: Eight points lead

[espnstar.com]
Samuel Eto'o's first-half goal earned Inter Milan a narrow win over Lazio and ensured the Nerazzurri ended the year with an eight-point lead at the top of the Serie A table.

The Cameroon international struck in the 14th minute to enable Jose Mourinho's side to return to winning ways.

The triumph gave Inter a comfortable cushion over second-placed AC Milan, whose game at Fiorentina yesterday was postponed due to bad weather.

And Mourinho will be pleased to have ended a controversial week on a high note following a verbal dispute with a journalist after last weekend's draw at Atalanta that has led to criticism in the Italian press.

For Lazio, the result left them in 16th place - three points clear of the drop zone.

Lazio went into the game still buoyed by last week's 1-0 triumph over Genoa, their first win since August 30.

Having claimed just one point in their last two games, Inter showed more determination and bossed possession in the early stages of the game.

And they were soon rewarded.

Eto'o latched onto Dejan Stankovic's cross and his header was parried by Lazio goalkeeper Fernando Muslera only as far as Eto'o, who fired into the back of the net.

Lazio should have levelled the score in the 18th minute but Tommaso Rocchi's close-range strike from Stefano Mauri's assist went inches wide.

At the other end, Stankovic's cross towards the far post found Sulley Muntari, whose effort went wide.

On the half-hour mark, Sebastiano Siviglia made a crucial tackle on Eto'o inside the area, with the Nerazzurri striker ready to fire.

Lazio continued to surge forward in search of the equaliser and they almost succeeded 10 minutes before the break.

Aleksandar Kolarov served Mourad Meghni inside the area but his eight-yard strike went wide.

Lazio showed more determination after the re-start but it was Inter who carried the greater threat going forward.

Eto'o almost scored his second of the evening early in the second half.

A fast counter-attack by Inter saw Diego Milito's through-ball find Eto'o inside the area but his right-footed strike went inches wide of the near post.

Shortly after the hour mark, Kolarov's bullet strike from distance stunned Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar but the ball went just wide of the far post.

At the other end, Esteban Cambiasso's curled free-kick went over the bar.

Inter should have killed the game off with 15 minutes remaining but substitute Patrick Vieira's header from Cambiasso's corner kick lacked power and proved an easy save for Muslera.

Lazio did not give up hope of taking home a point and substitute Julio Cruz should have done better in the 87th minute against his former club.

Cruz latched on to Fabio Firmani's pass but his right-footed strike inside the area went wide of the near post, much to the relief of the home fans.

Juventus 1-2 Catania: Third consecutive defeat

[espnstar.com]
Juventus crashed to their third consecutive defeat to leave coach Ciro Ferrara under pressure after a 2-1 loss to Catania.

The Sicilians picked up their first win over Juventus in more than 45 years thanks to a penalty from Jorge Martinez midway through the first half and a winner from Mariano Izco three minutes from time.

Hasan Salihamidzic had given Juve some hope in the 66th minute, but it was not enough to prevent another defeat for the Bianconeri.

With temperatures below freezing, the reception the Juve team received from their own fans was equally frosty.

The team bus was confronted by angry fans who threw eggs and fireworks at the team as they arrived at the Stadio Olimpico.

The hardcore fans behind one of the goals turned their backs on the team at the start of the game, missing the first chance which fell to Catania's Takayuki Morimoto.

Nicola Legrottaglie managed to get back to make a telling intervention as the Japanese striker prepared to shoot from just inside the area with only Juve goalkeeper Alex Manninger to beat.

Juve were struggling to settle and the tension on the terraces was accentuated by every misplaced pass.

Tiago then inexplicably gave away a penalty by almost ripping the shirt off Nicolas Spolli's back as they both contended room inside the penalty area.

Martinez scored from the spot but was ordered to re-take it as the referee had not blown his whistle, but the Uruguayan showed enough composure to send Manninger the wrong way for a second time.

Felipe Melo has been made a scapegoat by the Juve fans for their side's recent woes and he was met by a chorus of disapproval when Ferrara decided he had seen enough of the Brazilian midfielder after just over half an hour.

The time had come for Salihamidzic to make his return after missing much of the season due to injury, and he was warmly welcomed onto the field.

Diego's poor form has been synonymous with the Bianconeri's decline and he received ironic cheers from the home fans when he placed a shot over the crossbar from level with the penalty spot in the 53rd minute.

Juve then equalised with a goal made in the Bundesliga.

Former Werder Bremen forward Diego lifted the ball into the penalty area where former Bayern Munich defender Salihamidzic had found space to control the ball, turn, and place it past Mariano Andujar.

The home side grew in confidence and started to look for a winner with Andujar making a reflex save to deny David Trezeguet in the 75th minute.

But it was Catania who hit them on the break in the 87th minute with Izco racing through to score his first goal in Serie A and earn the Sicilians their first win over Juventus since 1963.

Atalanta 1-1 Intermilan: Tiribocchi equaliser

[english.aljazeera.net]
Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan were held to a 1-1 draw at Atalanta after being reduced to 10 men when Wesley Sneijder was sent off for a second yellow card on 65 minutes.

City rivals AC Milan failed to capitalise on the result when they were beaten 2-0 at home by Palermo.

Mourinho, who was serving a touchline ban, watched from the stands as the defending champions Inter went ahead after 15 minutes through Diego Milito.

Atalanta made the most of playing against 10 man Inter by snatching a point on 81 minutes through a Simone Tiribocchi equaliser, although they still drop into the bottom three.

The draw was still enough for Inter to extend their lead at the top, though, as Milan suffered at the hands of Palermo at the San Siro.

Simone Tiribocchi fired home the equaliser for Atalanta, beating Brazil defender Lucio not long after Sneijder picked up his second yellow for a late tackle.

Milito had put Inter ahead after dribbling around three defenders and Sneijder nearly made it 2-0 when he slammed a free kick against the crossbar in the 33rd, but by the end Mourinho had little to smile about from his spot in the tribune.

Second-placed Milan slipped five points behind Inter when Fabrizio Miccoli scored one goal and helped set up Mark Bresciano for the second in Palermo's deserved win.

Milan were unable to take advantage of a couple of well-placed crosses from Ronaldinho.

Milan also struggled in a 1-1 draw with FC Zurich in the Champions League this week.

"Handling fatigue with all these games is never easy," Milan coach Leonardo said.

"Today we weren't at the same level as the last few games...We didn't play poorly but we came up against a Palermo side that played better."

Inter lead with 36 points, Milan are second with 31 and third-place Juventus have 30.
