In the match at Croke Park Stadium, holding the host Italy 2-2. Italy coming from behind twice by the Irish.
The first was when goalkeeper Buffon uprooted Glenn Whelan in minutes 8. Goal is then repaid by Mauro Camoranesi in the 26th minute. 1-1 score held until halftime.
At 87 minutes, goalkeeper Buffon again broken down. This time by Sean St Ledger. Fortunately, in the injury time, Alberto Gilardino could save Azzurri from defeat.
With this result Italy have 21 points from nine games. Ireland who have one game remaining it was impossible to catch because it only got 17 points.
